Our Halloween was action packed. It started with a pumpkin patch or two.
Last year we'd been to an orchard where there was a giant pumpkin patch. Since it was already Halloween, Rebecca and I had reconciled ourselves to the fact that most of the pumpkins would already have been picked, but we figured it was still worth the trip; we'd be able to get some good photos of Charlotte and Max whilst avoiding having to spend much. We pulled up, unstrapped the kids from their car seats, changed nappies, found necessary snacks, and eventually got them settled into their push chairs. Ready for anything, we approached the gates.
They were closed.
It took us another bewildered moment to notice the enormous 'closed' sign hanging right in front of our faces. This struck me as pretty ridiculous....surely if there's one day a year that a pumpkin patch should be open, it would be on Halloween?
So it was back to the car, back into the car seats, and back across town. Needless to say the babes weren't happy with us, but I had high hopes for redeeming myself. There's a pumpkin patch I'd seen a little closer to home so we decided to try our luck there. As we walked in we noticed that hay bales were being loaded back onto trucks, games were being packed up, and what had been a petting zoo was sitting empty. Apparently the day Halloween itself is far too late for a trip to a pumpkin patch; who knew?
Thankfully the workers who were busy packing up everything were gracious enough to let us interrupt them for long enough to take Charlotte for a turn on the inflatable obstacle course. Happily, they were just preoccupied enough not to notice, or be particularly bothered, that I was over the weight limit and neither of us were wearing socks. It probably wouldn't have flown on any other day so we were grateful for the oversight.
Charlotte had a turn on the swings, and, true to form her expression didn't changed once. Not when we sat her in the seat, not when she started moving, not when we waved manically as she flew past, not when she eventually came to a stop and was set free. Three tokens well spent.
And we made a pumpkin gingerbread trifle, which was eaten for dinner. We decided that Halloween was probably one of the few occasions that it would be ok to skip the savoury course entirely. Dinner desert was closely followed by the ward Trunk or Treat, which turned out to be a three Stake Trunk or Treat. Or, in other words, total anarchy!
We had a cute little pumpkin
A very tanned Snow White
A corpse bride, a Zombie, and Ryan just wore what he wishes he could wear everyday.
Max had been seriously jet lagged and was usually ready for bed by 5:30, but we learned that all we needed to do to keep him awake and happy was present him with a lollipop! Charlotte seemed to have fun...she said 'Please' instead of 'Trick or Treat', which I think actually won her more candy than she would of received otherwise. Of course, she'd never eaten so many sweets in her life and she was definitely happy with her spoils; she proudly sported 'chocolate mouth' to prove it.
