Ryan had fond memories of a mystery place, somewhere in the vicinity of Las Vegas, that he visited as a kid with his family and Grandparents. He remembered there was water, lots of plants, and fun trails, but the rest was hazy. He's been determined to go back and visit ever since we moved here, a difficult thing to make happen when you don't know what direction it's in. After trawling through books about local outdoor places to visit he finally found some photos that rang a bell.
Ergo, last weekend we drove straight past our usual turn off for Mt. Charleston and cruised on towards Corn Creek Field Station. From the road it's hard to believe there's a stream feeding nearby ponds, nevermind all of those plants Ryan remembered, but two miles down a bumpy dirt road and an oasis emerged ahead of us.
It's the perfect place to take a toddler whose determined to do all of her own walking...
...and running!
One of the trails led us to this 1920's cabin, made from railway ties. To Charlotte's frustration the doors were all locked (she checked them thoroughly) and she wasn't happy that lizards were coming and going under the door when she couldn't get inside.
Which I'm pretty sure is why I couldn't get her to smile:
Being an aeroplane with Daddy
Good old stepping stones
We thought we were going to see lots of animals, given the surroundings, and we had the bright idea of telling Charlotte that we were going looking for snakes and chipmunks. It turns out that when you're surrounded by plants and vegetation animals are pretty hard to spot, even if you can hear them all over the place. We did manage to find some crickets and 'buggies' which according to Charlotte are as cool as snakes and chipmunks
No wonder Ryan remembered this little gem; it's got a little bit of everything. We rounded off our little walk with a stop at a local bakery on our way back to town. What better way to round off a walk than with a cupcake iced with a mountain of buttercream frosting? No photo's of those- they didn't last long enough!
